Toward Wholeness: Planetary Cycles and the Healing Process

The word “heal” comes from an Old English root meaning “whole.” To heal is to move toward wholeness. Through the lens of natal astrology, wholeness is not a fixed state but a potential unique to each person–a path to fulfill the highest possibilities shown by the specific configurations of their natal chart. From this perspective, healing is not just about resolving health issues. It’s an invitation to actualize one’s full potential.
These ideas, from an article I recently wrote for The Evolving Astrologer, are simple but profound.
Let's break it down a bit.
To heal is to move toward wholeness
In Western medicine, healing is generally viewed as fixing what is broken. But what if we are not broken? What if we thought of healing as a journey that invites us to learn and grow along the way?
Healing can mean different things at different times and for different people. For example, a person might have a broken bone and want to restore it to wholeness. Healing takes time and has different stages. Over time, pain might decrease, or the person's ability to bear weight might increase.
Of course, a person also has the opportunity to heal beyond the physical along the way. They might have feelings that evolve through the process. They might discover new strengths or different abilities that lead their life in new directions.
This healing process can help a person change, evolve, and learn more about who they are. Learning more about who one is through a healing process can be part of a journey to wholeness in more ways beyond the physical.
Wholeness is not a fixed state but a potential unique to each person
The lens of astrology reminds us that not only is healing a journey, but each of us is on a journey specific to who we are.
The simplest and often most profound insight many people have when studying astrology is the realization that everyone is unique, that no one person is inherently more special or better than another. We ALL have strengths, talents, areas of challenge, and growth potential.
Each person has a path to find purpose and fulfill their highest potential. The journey and the destination, as well as the meaning one finds along the way, are unique to each human being.
The natal astrology chart provides a compass that helps each person understand their unique path to wholeness.
Healing is an invitation to actualize one’s full potential
When we view healing as a journey and wholeness as the destination, the path is different for each person and has a bigger picture of meaning that can help a person learn and grow over time.
A healing journey, even one as straightforward as a broken bone, occurs in the context of a person's life and their journey of self-discovery.
So while the medical treatment for a broken bone might be the same for different people, the experience of moving through the healing process takes place in the context of a bigger picture of meaning for the person.
For example, a person might break a bone just before their wedding, while traveling overseas, or when they feel stuck and need to make a change but aren't sure what to do.
The "same" broken bone can be part of a journey to wholeness in very different ways at different times and for different people.
Finding meaning from planetary cycles
Planetary cycles can give us insight into the personal impact of an injury and how it may affect a person's overall life journey.
Understanding the meaning and significance of these cycles can help propel a person along their path to wholeness on multiple levels. Understanding how a challenging event is an invitation to expand into one's full potential is an empowering view that helps people find creative solutions.
